The Rebirth of the Ether

Ronald Desmet

Onderzoeksoutput: Chapter

This paper aims to rehabilitate Alfred North Whitehead's ether concept by replacing a commonplace in the history of science with a more subtle story. The commonplace holds that the advent of the theory of relativity in 1905 implied the end of all meaningful ether talk. The more subtle story tells us that, even though Albert Einstein rejected all mechanical ether concepts, he also introduced a new ether concept in terms of which space-time geometry, gravitation and electromagnetism might be unified, and that in this respect, Einstein and Whitehead were two of a kind.
