Samenvatting

We review our results in the field of transformation optics. First, we show how transformation optics can be used in the design of optical cavities. Using radial and angular transformations of the coordinate system, we derive several designs for subwavelength optical cavities that do not suffer from the diffraction limitation. The second component that we address is a frequency-converting device. We implement an analogue of the biggest frequency shifter that exists: the universe. We calculate the material properties required to implement the Robertson-Walker metric with dielectrics and derive a frequency shifter based on the transformation-optical equivalent of the cosmological redshift. This medium with well-defined time-dependent material parameters can change the optical frequency even though it supports linear electromagnetic waves.
