Thermal parameters evolution with ageing of LiFePO4 pouch cells and post-mortem analysis

Lithium ion batteries are being used extensively in various fields of application. Several chemistries exist which are to being tested to be used in the field of mobility and transportation. Ageing is one of the main phenomenon which needs to be understood or predicted for these batteries for safety as well as untroubled operation in electric vehicles. This paper will look into the ageing phenomenon of LFP 14Ah cells by through thermal parameters evolution.
An accurate Electro-Thermal model (combination of electrical and thermal model) was used to estimate and validate the values for thermal capacitance (Cth), thermal resistance (Rthi) and convection thermal resistance (Rcon) of the fresh and aged cells was used to calculate the values for specific heat capacity (Cp), thermal conductivity (λ) and convection heat transfer coefficient (H). Electrical and thermal characterisation tests were performed in-order to extract the parameters required for the model. Further post mortem analysis was performed on fresh and aged cells to qualitatively analyse the extent of ageing in the cells. Such a study could lead to improving battery management systems in electric vehicles and choosing particular lithium ion battery chemistry as well as topology for electric vehicles.
