Utilitarian truths: How much disinformation and distrust can a democracy tolerate?

Onderzoeksoutput: ChapterSpecialistpeer review

Samenvatting

In this essay, we examine the contentious relation between truth, disinformation and freedom of expression. We argue that the defence of disinformation as freedom of speech
on utilitarian grounds can be criticised in several respects, and in particular point to the significant societal costs when disinformation runs rampant, especially when it obfuscates the truth in democratic processes.
