Samenvatting

Current practices in monolingual and multilingual education still tend towards homogeneity. Educational models that aim for homogeneity no longer reflect the heterogeneous composition of our classes and of society, local and at large. Starting from the observation of linguistic diversity, we discuss a number of multilingual instructional strategies to take advantage of this heterogeneity to valorize language learning opportunities. We conclude by taking a look at teacher beliefs and attitudes towards the role of language in learning and make a call for further professional development.
