Scriptie/Masterproef: Master's Thesis

Samenvatting

This study aims to investigate the usefulness of DIY corpora in academic translation in the pair Portuguese <> English, through a literature review of recent advances in this area and the analysis of empirical evidence that was collected during the research. A review of the concepts of corpus-based studies applied to translation was conducted to identify appropriate tools and techniques for the translation process of academic texts. Subsequently, qualitative and quantitative data was collected and analysed on the usefulness of DIY corpora in the translation process based not only on the quality of the results obtained through the corpora created, but also on the effort to create the resources according to the time required to perform the tasks (quantitative dimension) and the description of the necessary steps (qualitative dimension). The DIY corpora created were also analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively in relation to the terminological results obtained in the evaluation of terms from a reference standard, previously validated for the translation of academic articles in the field of pulmonology. The research allowed the construction and exploration of four DIY corpora from the specialty area of pulmonology that ranged from 180,000 thousand to over 10 million words that can be used during academic translation tasks. In addition, we identified tools and procedures that can be replicated during the academic translation of articles from other specialty areas.
