The objective of this paper is to examine through a literature review if for-market producing, commercial urban agriculture could be a feasible and viable option for European cities to enhance their sustainable development. The scope of the study is narrowed down to a search for evidence in secondary data about physical potential in cities, meaning space, and the 'perception climate' in urban planning. Several databases were searched and ten documents selected for an evaluation of their general scientific criteria. First main result of the literature review is that scientific information on the specific issue of commercial urban agriculture in European cities is very scarce. It is therefore suggested that more scientific research on the issue is needed. Second main result is that some evidence was found which enables the assumption that commercial urban agriculture could be a feasible and viable option for European cities in their strategies for sustainable urban development. It is acknowledged that a set of difficulties has to be faced before, but the interesting report of a project in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, gives reason for motivation to face them.
