Samenvatting

This thesis conducts a comparative close reading of the gender dynamics presented in Revolutionary Road (1961) by American writer Richard Yates and Ordinary People (2018) By Black British author Diana Evans. Both novels explore relationships, family and everyday life, but are set in the 1950s and the early 21st century respectively. Drawing on the feminist theories of Simone de Beauvoir and Betty Friedan, this study aims to offer insight into the female protagonists’ struggles against traditional gender norms by focusing on their experiences with marriage, motherhood, infidelity and mental illness. It aims to demonstrate how Yates’ April and Evans’ Melissa, living in different times and cultural contexts, experience womanhood and to what extent their respective gender roles and power struggles are influenced by their respective societies.
