Samenvatting

The body can be seen as a metaphor and it is one that has been used to explain society
for centuries. My question is now: What do we really know about the body and society? I
have researched this topic in different philosophers such as Plato, Salisbury and Hobbes. On
the other hand, I also discuss contemporary ideas. In particular, the body metaphor of
Gregory Stock. In doing so, I searched for sameness and differences in approach and use of
metaphors. To help myself with this research I determined what knowledge is and how it
relates to metaphors and analogies. The complete thesis gives an insight in what metaphors
can be and how they can be used.
