SamenvattingThe role of illumination is an important aspect of public projects. Various facets are considered, such as standards and safety considerations. These standards are tools for developing quantitative and qualitative lighting. There are also specific safety considerations that must be observed to discourage crime. The economic and the environmental factors have an increasingly important role in public lighting as well. If you do not use the correct lighting fixtures for the right applications, you risk losing energy efficiency of the illumination. This inefficiency has a negative impact on economic and environmental levels.
Using this research, a method is provided to developers to analyse their lighting arrangement and allows them to compare different options. Afterwards this method will be put in practice by means of a case study executed for the new construction project site XY at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB).
In the first stage of the study knowledge is acquired on the different points of importance when it comes to lighting (standards, safety, environment, price and comfort) by means of various scientific studies.
In the next stage the lighting formulas are applied and modelled through the programs Matlab and Dialux to find the ideal setting of the armatures. LED is chosen as the light source because of its longevity, durability and technology (colour changing capacities, dimming technology, etc.). Then 4 luminaires are chosen whereby the colour temperature is above 4000 K and color-index above 70. This will result in a higher sense of safety while at the same time also creating a relaxed atmosphere in and around the campus. These 4 light fixtures are finally evaluated against five criteria in order to identify optimum light fixtures for the site XY.
