Samenvatting

The rationally equipped kitchen named CUBEX, designed by modernist architect Louis Herman De Koninck between 1927 and 1929, is Belgian heritage, developed in anticipation of the modern way of living. Though many of 20th- century architectural periodicals and women’s magazines have published articles on the concept of CUBEX, little reading material can be found on its manufacturing and technical detailing. This research therefore provides an answer to the following questions: What are the technical building stones of a standardised CUBEX kitchen from the 1930s? What are the specificities of its manufacturing process and the used materials?
The CUBEX kitchen design was modular, as it was comprised of individual elements that could be stacked according to the floorplan of the designated kitchen. Throughout its manufacturing by the Van de Ven company from 1932 until 1962, two major different CUBEX versions can be distinguished and will be amply commented in this master thesis. However, they both share common characteristics: all components were manufactured of wood and based on the optimal ergonomic measurements of a width and depth of 60 centimetres. Furthermore, this CUBEX design embraced the incorporation of -at the time revolutionary- kitchen appliances.
The research learns that at the present day still many CUBEX kitchens are present in Belgian households, though they are not well maintained or replaced. With the clear intention to contribute to the preservation of this 20th-century Belgian legacy, this research contains a substantiated proposition for both the correct restoration of historical CUBEX kitchens and for the manufacturing of new 21st-century CUBEX kitchen designs. This research was conducted by Margot Missoorten over the course of the academic year 2019-2020 to obtain the degree of Master of Science in Architectural Engineering.
