The 'Netflix Undercover Cop'
: The portrayal of undercover agents in the media: an analysis of the 'Undercover' series

Scriptie/Masterproef: Master's Thesis

Samenvatting

Undercover assignments, carried out by the police, have long been used in the
fight against serious and organized crime when traditional techniques are not
sufficient. This has long been done without any legal basis, while the assignments
can have serious and far-reaching consequences for the undercover agent. Also
for the person who is the subject of the undercover assignment the consequences
are not to be underestimated, since the assignments imply that the undercover
agent makes contact in a covert way with the aim of gathering information and
evidence with the ultimate goal of convicting the person in question. The academic
literature on this topic is very scarce. However, undercover agents are well
represented in the media. The popular Netflix series undercover was watched
millions of times. By means of an literature study and a content analysis of the
series, it is examined to what extent the series represents reality and whether it
paints a realistic picture of an undercover assignment. The legislation is not shown
enough on the television screen and the critical viewer can find violations of this
legislation. The risks for undercover agents correspond largely to the academic
research on this subject, however, certain sensitivities are magnified too much.
This research wants to offer transparency and a description of the job, since this
is a gap in the Belgian police research. This topic deserves extra attention and
further research is certainly opportune.
