This project aims to investigate how the theater experience can be made accessible to blind and visually impaired people through audio description (AD), a specific form of audiovisual translation (AV) that translates visual information into verbal information. The existing models of audio description are mainly aimed at being able to follow the story of a film or stage performance, in other words they are mainly narratologically inspired. Many aspects of a theater performance, such as the atmosphere, the aesthetics, the physical interpretation of a role, the lighting, the costuming, the use of video projections, etc. are not discussed enough. While it is precisely these elements that are essential for a global theater experience. Based on a corpus of performances by Toneelhuis and NTGent, a new model of AD will be developed in which these aspects of intermediality can also be translated for this target group. To this end, the intentions of the creation process are included in the layout of the AD.
